The U.K. now expects Israel to retaliate against Iran’s weekend attack, Britain’s top diplomat said Wednesday.

Speaking on a visit to Israel to meet key government figures, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Cameron told reporters it was “clear” Israel is “making a decision to act.”

“It’s right to have made our views clear about what should happen next, but it’s clear the Israelis are making a decision to act,” Cameron said.

“We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible — and in a way that, as I said yesterday, is smart as well as tough,” he added.

Israel is yet to respond to the Iranian attack, which saw a flurry of missile and drone strikes directed at Israel. It came in retaliation for an attack on Iran’s Damascus consulate. The country’s war cabinet has been mulling its response, but Cameron has been among those urging Israel to show restraint.

While in Israel, Cameron is expected to meet Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and fellow Foreign Minister Israel Katz. Cameron met Israel’s President Isaac Herzog Wednesday morning.

Netanyahu spoke to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Tuesday night, with Sunak telling the Israeli PM it “was a moment for calm heads to prevail,” according to a readout provided by Sunak’s office.
