Here’s What The Indiana Uber Driver Confessed He Did To Chanti Dixon
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey shared that Chanti Dixon ordered an Uber at around 3:34 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, per ABC News. The 30-year-old was headed home from work, but the travel distance between both locations remains unclear. It is noted that she made one stop before her final stop near her home address.
Officials recovered Dixon’s body — naked, unresponsive, and flipped on her stomach — after her family traced her location to the wooded area near her home and called 911. Upon investigation, they discovered a gunshot wound to the left side of her head, per ABC. Police also found two phones belonging to Dixon near her body. Dixon’s mother provided police with the passcodes for both her phones, per Fox59. The mom was on the scene when police declared Chanti Dixon deceased.
Within hours, their investigation led them to 29-year-old Francisco Valdez. According to the arrest affidavit, Valdez first told cops that an armed Black man approached his car, tried to rob Chanti, and shot her in the thigh. He claimed that he pulled off and cleaned the blood out of his vehicle. He reportedly told two additional conflicting stories before confessing to the murder and attempted rape.
Valdez allegedly admitted to sexually assaulting Dixon in the backseat near her home. Additionally, he claimed that Dixon insulted his body during the rape, which caused him to fatally shoot her, per Fox59. After killing her, Valdez said he dragged her body out of his car and placed it behind a concrete barrier. Furthermore, he allegedly attempted to have sex with her lifeless body.
Uber & IMPD Speak Out About Francisco Valdez
Following the Uber driver’s arrest, the company released a statement addressing Chanti Dixon’s death. “Our hearts break for Ms. Dixon’s family and loved ones. The details of this act of violence are atrocious, and we will assist Indianapolis police however we can as they continue to investigate,” it read.
Also, Police Chief Chris Bailey and Assistant Chief Catherine Cummings have assured Indianapolis rideshare users that Uber remains a “safe” travel option. Bailey called Dixon’s death an “unnecessarily by an evil act,” while Cummings defended women and girls’ right to safety.
“Women, girls, mothers have a right to exist freely in our community without fear of something heinous happening to them. They have a right to walk, bike, order, rideshare without fearing something bad will happen to them. This is a family’s worst nightmare, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family during this trying time.”
Fox59 reports that Valdez has been preliminarily charged with felony murder. IMPD officials have reportedly said Valdez could face additional charges. Meanwhile, ABC News says his next court appearance will take place on Thursday (Sept. 12).
